چکیده

We highlight the importance of transit observations on understanding the physics of planetary atmospheres and interiors. Transmission spectra and emission spectra of atmospheres allow us to characterize these exotic atmospheres, which possess TiO, VO, H2O, CO, Na, and K, as principal absorbers. We calculate mass-radius relations for water-rock-iron and gas giant planets and examine these relations in light of current and future transit observations. A brief review is given of mechanisms that could lead to the large radii observed for some transiting planets.

Multicolor Observations of a Planetary Transit of Hd 209458

We present BV RIZ photometric observations of HD 209458 during the transit by its planetary companion on UT 1999 November 15 with the University of Hawaii 0.6m and 2.2m telescopes and the High Altitude Observatory STARE telescope. The detailed shape of the transit curve is predicted to vary with color due primarily to the color-dependent limb-darkening of the star, but potentially due as well t...

Independent assessment of source transit time for the BEBIG SagiNova® high dose rate brachytherapy afterloader

Introduction: The dwell time and transit time components contribute to the overall delivered dose to patients in high dose rate (HDR) brachytherapy treatments. The transit time results from source entry and exit as well as source movements between dwell positions. It depends on various parameters such as the source speed profile, source indexer distance to dwell position, and ...

Exoplanetary System WASP - 3 : the Projected Spin - Orbit Angle and Evidence for Stellar Activity

In this thesis, I present new spectroscopic and photometric observations of WASP-3, a transiting extrasolar planetary system. From spectra obtained during two transits, I use the Rossiter-McLaughlin effect in a simplified physical model to determine the projected spin-orbit angle between the planetary orbital axis and the stellar rotation axis, A = 2 .91 4 degrees. I use the new photometric dat...

Observational Window Functions in Planet Transit Surveys

The probability that an existing planetary transit is detectable in one’s data is sensitively dependent upon the window function of the observations. We quantitatively characterize and provide visualizations of the dependence of this probability as a function of orbital period upon several observing strategy and astrophysical parameters, such as length of observing run, observing cadence, lengt...

Low False Positive Rate of Kepler Candidates Estimated from a Combination of Spitzer and Follow-up Observations

NASA’s Kepler mission has provided several thousand transiting planet candidates during the four years of its nominal mission, yet only a small subset of these candidates have been confirmed as true planets. Therefore, the most fundamental question about these candidates is the fraction of bona fide planets. Estimating the rate of false positives of the overall Kepler sample is necessary to der...
